Following a highly successful first season that welcomed thousands of spectators and hosted acclaimed music and theatre productions, Lycabettus Municipal Theatre returns this autumn with an ambitious programme that further establishes the iconic Athenian venue as one of Greece’s leading open-air cultural destinations. From late August to early October, the theatre, managed by Technopolis City of Athens, will present ancient drama, contemporary theatre, major concerts and international productions against the spectacular backdrop of the illuminated city.

This autumn, we return with a programme of exceptional quality, bringing together different artistic disciplines, leading Greek creators and international productions. Lycabettus Municipal Theatre continues to offer unforgettable cultural experiences overlooking Athens.
The autumn programme opens on 30 August with Euripides’ The Bacchae, an international co-production between the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre of Bulgaria and the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG), featuring a live performance by The Tiger Lillies. It is followed by Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid. Ancient Greek drama takes centre stage throughout the season with productions of Aeschylus’ The Persians, Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and Peace, Euripides’ Medea, and Sophocles’ Antigone, alongside Carlo Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters and the acclaimed comedy Black Sambuca – Iconic. Among the highlights are Karyofyllia Karabeti’s return to the role of Medea nearly three decades after her landmark performance, Phoebus Delivorias’ adaptation of Peace, and Stavros Xarhakos’ Journey to the Light, performed by Giannis Kotsiras and Iro Saia.
Music remains at the heart of the programme, with concerts by Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Ioulia Karapataki, Giannis Haroulis, Evanthia Reboutsika, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Villagers of Ioannina City and Miltos Paschalidis, alongside a special tribute to Mikis Theodorakis featuring Thodoris Ferris, the Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra, Klavdia and Angelos Theodorakis. The international line-up is equally impressive, with Jack Savoretti launching his European tour in Athens, The Gathering, featuring Anneke van Giersbergen, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mandylion, Sivert Høyem returning with his unmistakable baritone voice, and French artist Slimane bringing his One Piano. One Voice tour to the Greek capital. The season concludes on 5 October with The Melodia 99.2 Cassette, a musical tribute to the 1990s.
