Athens in May: A Citywide Festival of Culture and Creativity.

May in Athens means Festival. At the heart of spring, from May 1 to 31, the City of Athens Festival transforms the entire city into a vast, open stage of culture, creativity and connection.

The Festival, implemented by Developing Athens, extends this year across every corner of the capital—from the historic centre and long-established neighbourhoods to the most vibrant and up-and-coming districts—inviting residents and visitors from Greece and abroad to become part of a unique experience.

In his statement, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, notes:

This May, we have more than 300 reasons to enjoy Athens together. Pedestrian streets, squares, groves and parks, galleries, archaeological sites, theatres and cinemas host the city’s largest spring celebration. Music, visual arts, performances, open-air screenings, wellness activities, educational programmes, gastronomic experiences and themed walks come together in a mosaic that highlights the diversity of Athens. This is the City of Athens Festival. Come and feel the energy and rhythm of the city. Your city, your festival.

For his part, the CEO of Developing Athens, Elissaios Sarmas, emphasises:

Our goal this year, once again, is to bring culture closer to citizens by activating every part of the city as a space for expression and encounter. The City of Athens Festival creates experiences for everyone, strengthening people’s everyday connection with public space and contemporary culture.

Your City, Your Festival

With the motto “Your city, your festival,” Athens celebrates with more than 300 events, all with free admission, forming a dynamic programme for all ages and interests.

Distinctive experiences unfold across the city: from a jazz band from North Carolina at the National Garden and a performance by the Greek National School of Dance on the rooftop of Arsakeio, to the Winter Swimmers at the National Archaeological Museum, large-scale parties at Lycabettus Hill, Zappeion and Kerameikos, traditional folk festivals and open-air screenings of beloved films.

The festival opens on May 1 with the established picnic at Plato’s Academy, setting the tone for a month full of cultural activity.

With free events for all, without exclusions and with respect for the principles of sustainability, the Festival creates a shared space of encounter, where everyday life is transformed into a unique experience and the city reveals its most authentic rhythm.
