Athens Surreal returns this autumn with Urban Landing, an exhibition that reimagines the Greek capital as a city in constant flux, a place where concrete, history, and imagination collide. Hosted at LAVA Space, the show continues the project’s signature transformation of Athenian landmarks and infrastructures into dreamlike, speculative visions where the everyday becomes unfamiliar, playful, and alive.
At its core, Athens Surreal / Urban Landing expands the collective’s ongoing exploration of public space. It approaches architecture not only as the art of constructing form but as the choreography of lived experience—spaces that gain meaning through use, encounter, and transformation. As philosopher Jean Baudrillard once noted, a city without its scenes of activity risks becoming a mere cluster of buildings. What animates it, instead, are the performances, gestures, and shared moments that render space truly urban.
Through this lens, the exhibition reactivates Athens as a landscape of imagination: streets as playgrounds, monuments as living habitats, and infrastructures that welcome both human and non-human life. Yet alongside these poetic reconfigurations lies a deeper urgency. The works respond to the pressures of climate change and the environmental realities shaping urban life today. They ask how cities can evolve—ecologically and socially—by reclaiming play, adaptability, and communal care as essential civic values.
Technology, too, plays a crucial role. Generative AI emerges here not as a cold instrument but as a creative partner, a means of dreaming with technology rather than through it. The resulting images blur the boundaries between real and imagined, extending Athens into hyperreal scenographies of possibility.
In this surreal cityscape, Athens is no longer defined solely by its ruins or its sprawling concrete, but by its capacity for transformation—by a future where humans, animals, and technologies cohabit within shared, ever-changing spaces. Athens Surreal / Urban Landing invites viewers to look again at the city they thought they knew, and to rediscover it as a living stage of continuous reinvention.
