Blender Gallery: Trifles and Troupes, Everything Lies Under the Surface.

Exhibition Opening: Thursday 28 November 7PM-11-PM

Drawing inspiration from Siegfried Kracauer’s notion of “small catastrophes” as surface-level expressions, this exhibition at The Blender Gallery delves into ephemeral gestures that, while shaping historical and contemporary psychosocial landscapes, are often dismissed as insignificant. “trifles and troupes, everything lies under the surface” seeks to examine, transcribe, and ultimately legitimize diary narratives, temporary archives, and minor details.

The artworks, rooted in everyday life, reveal the multifaceted potential of the surface and the unnoticed meaning inherent in what is considered trivial, ephemeral, and popular. The aim is to demystify and ultimately visualize the value of these surface-level expressions, echoing Kracauer’s words. Starting from the transient or marginalized—that which simultaneously serves as a protective mechanism or a means of intrusion, isolation, and collectivism—the exhibition aims to decode both contemporary commonplace actions, needs, or behaviors, and historically complex mythologies, traditions, and geopolitics, by listening to their representations.

Through surfaces that wound or heal, that disperse or entertain, that build fantasies or function practically, the artworks create a constellation that refuses to exist merely as a filler for existential voids. Instead, they aspire to be seen as vocabularies, successions, and transformations that are informed by the trivial, the foreign, or the alienated, as well as by hope, trust, or the ecstasy of unconditional coexistence.

The exhibition poses questions such as: How can we penetrate the visible, wander between the real and the hypothetical, listen to the body, exposed or protected, celebrate the seemingly insignificant, touch the delusional? How do we choose to connect and simultaneously escape from our surroundings, deconstructing the iconic and stubbornly persisting at the surface?
