GHIKA: A Journey from West to East.

24/10/2024 – 16/02/2025

The Benaki Museum marks 30 years since the passing of the acclaimed Greek artist Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika with the exhibition “A Journey from West to East.” Running from October 24, 2024, to February 16, 2025, this exhibition explores the transformative travels that shaped Ghika’s art, uniting the influences of Western and Eastern cultures.

Central to the exhibition is Ghika’s participation in a 1958 international educational program sponsored by the U.S. government. This journey spanned the United States, Japan, India, and Nepal, serving as more than a mere travel itinerary—it became a profound exploration of cultural, artistic, and spiritual intersections. Immersed in diverse philosophies, traditions, and narratives, Ghika deepened his appreciation of the connections between East and West, reshaping his artistic vision.

The exhibition, curated by Ioanna Moraiti, is thoughtfully divided into two sections:

  • “The Journey to the West” captures Ghika’s travels across the United States and Mexico, highlighting his aspirations for an international career. Works such as Green and Silver and his intricate sketches showcase his impressions of Western landscapes and cultures.
  • “The Return via the East” delves into his exposure to Asian art, music, and spirituality. Pieces in this section reveal the profound influence of Eastern traditions on his artistic language.

Beyond its artistic narrative, the exhibition also unveils a personal dimension, emphasizing Ghika’s deep connection with Barbara Warner, his muse and future wife, who accompanied him on this remarkable journey.

Interactive audiovisual elements and artifacts bring this journey to life, allowing visitors to step into the world that shaped one of Greece’s most iconic artists.

“A Journey from West to East” not only honors the legacy of Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika but also celebrates the timeless dialogue between cultures, offering a fresh perspective on the enduring connections between East and West
