The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation presents at its Athens Museum, from 6 December 2025 to 11 April 2026, the major temporary exhibition “From Monet to Warhol: Three Generations, One Collection, A Journey Through the Evolution of Modern Art.”
A total of 83 masterpieces, signed by 45 leading figures of modern and contemporary art, compose a unique visual panorama spanning more than 12 artistic movements. Through a captivating dialogue between works, the exhibition reconstructs the history of painting from Impressionism to the present day.
Iconic artists from the late 19th and 20th centuries — including Bonnard, Chagall, De Kooning, Degas, Dufy, Ernst, Gauguin, Kandinsky, Lichtenstein, Magritte, Man Ray, Marquet, Matisse, Modigliani, Monet, Morisot, Munch, Picasso, Pissarro, Seurat, Signac, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard and Warhol — are featured prominently. They are accompanied by lesser-known yet equally important and influential creators such as Angrand, Anquetin, Denis, Feininger, Friesz, Hayet, Lacombe, Laugé, Pourtau, Ranson, Redon, Sérusier, Szafran, Vallotton, among others.
Visitors are given the exceptionally rare opportunity to encounter, in a single exhibition, works that marked the most defining moments in the last 130+ years of art — from Impressionism to Pop Art, with significant stops along the way in Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Abstraction and Surrealism.
The exhibition is made possible through the generous loan of a Swiss private collection, the result of an unbroken passion for modern painting passed down through three generations of collectors. This collection exemplifies the refined eye and aesthetic of its owners while maintaining the coherence and breadth associated with the world’s most important private collections.
Creating an informal dialogue with the Museum’s permanent Collection, the exhibition seeks to highlight the significance of the collector’s gaze and instinct — and the desire to narrate the history of art through personal choices.
Works from this private collection have previously been presented in major international exhibitions and museums, earning the admiration of audiences and experts alike. Institutions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York; the Royal Academy of Arts and Tate Modern in London; Musée d’Orsay, Grand Palais and Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice; and the Beyeler Foundation in Basel. However, this is only the second time — and the first time in Greece — that such an extensive and representative selection is presented to the public.
The exhibition is curated by Maria Koutsomalli-Moreau, Collection Curator at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, and Marina Ferretti Bocquillon, Honorary Scientific Director of the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny.
A comprehensive trilingual catalogue (Greek, English, French) with detailed entries and documentation accompanies the exhibition.
