A Musical Walk at the Acropolis Museum with the Athens State Orchestra.

The Acropolis Museum welcomes spring with a different kind of chamber music concert in the Parthenon Gallery, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, by the Woodwind Quintet, as part of the “Musical Walks” series organized by the Athens State Orchestra.

The concert program highlights the richness and versatility of the Woodwind Quintet through works that bridge the European tradition with the American musical idiom. The evening opens with Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 “American”, arranged for winds, where simplicity and lyricism are combined with influences from American folk music.

This is followed by Denes Agay’s “Five Dances”, works marked by strong rhythm, humor, and references to Hungarian tradition. The concert concludes with George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, arranged for woodwind quintet, an iconic work that combines classical music with the vitality and energy of jazz. A night of strong contrasts and vivid timbres, showcasing the virtuosity and expressive power of wind instruments.

The distinguished musicians of the Athens State Orchestra will perform the following works:

  • ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK (1841 – 1904) | String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 “American” (arranged for woodwind quintet)
  • DENES AGAY (1911–2007) | Five Dances, for woodwind quintet
  • GEORGE GERSHWIN (1898–1937) | Rhapsody in Blue, arranged for woodwind quintet
