A New Urban Landscape Takes Shape in Athens.

Athens is changing — and this time, the transformation is taking root in Elaionas.

In an area long associated with neglect, construction is now underway for a new 25,000-square-metre park, set to become one of the city’s largest green spaces. What was once a former landfill is gradually being reimagined as a contemporary public environment, open and accessible to all.

The project marks a significant shift, not only for Elaionas but for Athens as a whole, reflecting a broader effort to improve everyday urban life through meaningful interventions in public space.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas shared an update on the works via social media, highlighting the transition “from plans to reality” — a phrase that captures the move from vision to tangible change.

The park is designed as a multi-functional landscape, integrating nature with activity. Plans include hundreds of trees, sports facilities, dedicated areas for dogs, and new infrastructure, all contributing to a renewed urban experience. From certain points, the view will extend as far as the Parthenon — a symbolic connection between the city’s historical identity and its evolving future.

Beyond its environmental value, the project reflects a new approach to city-making: public space not only as infrastructure, but as experience — open, inclusive and rooted in quality of life.

The new Elaionas is more than a park under construction. It is a promise — of more green within the city, of a more livable urban environment, and of an Athens that continues to evolve with intention.
