New Collection Inspired by the Exhibition “Kykladitisses: Untold Stories of Women in the Cyclades”

Inspired by the archaeological exhibition “Kykladitisses: Untold Stories of Women in the Cyclades” at the Museum of Cycladic Art, the new Cycladic Shop collection features replicas, collectible jewelry, and decorative objects adorned with motifs and themes from the exhibition’s artifacts, including the Knot of Aphrodite, saffron flowers, and the Kore of Thera.

At the Cycladic Shop, you can also find the bilingual (Greek-English) exhibition catalog, a 520-page publication featuring high-resolution photographs of all the exhibited objects. The catalog presents the artifacts in thematic sections, each accompanied by concise descriptions providing their full historical context. The introductory text, explaining the exhibition’s concept and thematic structure, is authored by its two curators, while the volume concludes with five essays written by leading scholars specializing in Cycladic culture.

For younger visitors, the comic book “Kykladitisses: Untold Stories of Three Girls from the Cyclades” is available. This illustrated book follows the journeys of three modern-day girls from the Cyclades, each embarking on her own adventure across the islands of the Aegean Archipelago. Guided by historical female figures who shaped the identity of these islands—such as Ariadne and Leto—the stories blend the past and present, intertwining goddesses and mortals, ancient and contemporary women of the Cyclades, to reveal what it truly means to be a Kykladitissa.

A few words about the exhibition

The landmark exhibition “Kykladitisses: Untold Stories of Women in the Cyclades”, which has captivated both Greek and international visitors in Athens, is organized by the Museum of Cycladic Art in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades). The exhibition will run until May 4, 2025. This is the first-ever pan-Cycladic exhibition, narrating history through the lens of women in the Cyclades, spanning from antiquity to the 19th century. The exhibition brings together 180 masterpieces from nearly every museum in the Cycladic islands—many of which have never left the Cyclades before, while some are being presented to the public for the first time. Among the exhibition’s highlights are three exceptional artifacts due to their uniqueness and scale: the colossal Kore of Thera, an archaic-period sculpture displayed to the public for the first time, the iconic fresco “Women in the Adyton” from the prehistoric site of Akrotiri, Thera, the statue of Artemis Elaphebolos from Delos, a Hellenistic-period masterpiece exhibited outside the island for the first time. In June 2025, the exhibition will be transferred in its entirety to the newly renovated Archaeological Museum of Thera, marking its grand reopening.
