Estée Lauder Hellas once again supports awareness and prevention of breast cancer by lighting up the iconic sculpture “The Runner” by artist Kostas Varotsos in the signature pink color, with the support of the City of Athens.
This emblematic artwork, full of light and movement, becomes part of the Estée Lauder Hellas Breast Cancer Campaign, continuing a tradition that since 2011 has “dressed in pink” beloved landmarks across Greece, spreading a message of hope and strength to every woman.
The illumination of The Runner will remain until November 10, the day of the 42nd Athens Marathon, serving as a symbolic point of inspiration for runners as they pass by the sculpture just before reaching the finish line.
A Broader Commitment to Prevention
As part of its long-standing commitment to prevention, Estée Lauder Hellas also strengthens the work of the Hellenic Cancer Society by donating 1% of all retail sales across all Estée Lauder Companies brands during October. This initiative contributes to the provision of free mammograms in remote and underserved areas of Greece through the Society’s Mobile Mammography Unit.
To date, Estée Lauder Hellas, in collaboration with the Hellenic Cancer Society, has offered more than 7,000 free mammograms to women who would otherwise not have access to preventive screening.
Voices of Support
Kostas Spyropoulos, General Manager of Estée Lauder Hellas, stated:
“Inspired by the values of the Estée Lauder Companies’ global initiative, we remain committed and empathetic in supporting life where the need is greatest. This collaboration significantly contributes to informing, educating, and raising awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Through targeted actions, awareness campaigns, and scientific events, Estée Lauder Hellas continues to spread knowledge and empower women to care for their health with responsibility and confidence. For us, Beauty is power — a power that transforms, unites, and gives hope. Once again, the illuminated Runner shares this message of hope with everyone.”
Haris Doukas, Mayor of Athens, added:
“Illuminated, the emblematic Runner by Kostas Varotsos shows us the way: prevention and timely information save lives. At the Municipal Clinics of the City of Athens, we provide completely free mammograms, breast and gynecological examinations, along with breast self-exam advice. At the same time, we offer important medical services and participate in awareness campaigns for the prevention of all forms of cancer, so that no one has to face a type of cancer that is curable if detected early.”
Evangelos Filopoulos, President of the Hellenic Cancer Society, noted:
“The consistent support from sponsors such as Estée Lauder Hellas, as well as from local communities, is the driving force that allows the Hellenic Cancer Society to continue its work. We are able to offer free mammograms to women in remote areas or in populations facing socioeconomic difficulties. The Mobile Mammography Units play a decisive role not only in the early detection of breast cancer but also in raising awareness among women about this major health issue. As a voluntary medical and social organization, the Hellenic Cancer Society will continue its 67-year-long mission, with strong allies who actively support us.”
Kostas Varotsos, artist, remarked:
“I am very happy that my work can contribute to such an important cause, the prevention and awareness of breast cancer.”
Additionally, this year, the Hellenic Cancer Society’s Mobile Mammography Unit, in collaboration with the City of Athens, will also provide free exams at the Refugee Hospitality Center of Ritsona.
