The Athenian Riviera has always held a magnetic allure. But beyond its scenic promenades, a new cultural pulse is taking shape. In the southern suburbs of Athens, art, literature, memory, and experimentation now anchor a deeper experience of place.
In Piraeus, the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation celebrates thirty years of cultural contribution with a yearlong program of events extending through 2025. The Foundation’s program spans both its physical spaces and its digital platforms, inviting audiences into a multi-sensory and participatory experience. In the Historical Library, the exhibition “30 years, 30 books” presents a rare collection of emblematic books, Enlightenment era texts, manuscripts on travel and faith, that reflect the timeless value of the written word. At the same time, an inventive escape room titled “The Great Secret of the Tiny Book” transforms the library into a narrative puzzle, where families and curious minds uncover hidden messages in old books, maps, and ex libris.
Beyond its physical collection, the Foundation expands its reach through its Digital Art Room, an online platform where viewers can engage with the maritime and artistic collections of Panagiotis Laskaridis through exhibitions like ““Konstantinos Volanakis: 1837–1907” and “Seascapes from the 19th Century”. Interactive applications such as puzzles, coloring books, and educational games make the experience accessible and engaging for all ages. Meanwhile, a new podcast series in collaboration with pod.gr retraces the steps of travelers through the Eastern Mediterranean, with episodes dedicated to cities like Athens, Thessaloniki, and Syros, narrated by Ioli Vingopoulou. The Foundation also relaunches the Book Fun Club, an updated digital platform for young readers that offers personalized book recommendations, writing contests, and workshops—reaffirming its mission to keep literature alive in a digital age.
A short distance away, still in the heart of Piraeus, Intermission Gallery presents Untitled—the first exhibition in Greece dedicated to the iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The show features a powerful selection of works on paper, created when the artist was as young as 18, that capture the raw energy and urgency of Basquiat’s emerging personal mythology. Skulls, crowns, weapons, and fighters leap from the pages in oilstick and graphite, offering a visual language that is both symbolic and searing. At once playful and political, the exhibition places Basquiat’s signature themes—race, identity, heroism, and commodification—into dialogue with the urban and cultural fabric of Piraeus. The space itself, designed by Kois Associated Architects, enhances the intensity of the works and situates them within a setting charged with industrial history and modern transformation. Untitled is more than a retrospective; it’s a raw conversation between global icons and local realities.
Just a few kilometers down the coast, in the heart of Glyfada, a different kind of cultural space unfolds. The newly inaugurated Cultural Center of Art and Letters Niki Papatheohari, located in the historic site of Astéria, is a sanctuary shaped by stone, light, and sea. Seventy original sculptures by the artist are presented in a setting that blends physical materiality with inner emotion. More than an exhibition, the space functions as a kind of open-air poem—where the weight and silence of stone carry memory, identity, and symbolic meaning. Papatheohari’s vision is rooted in her own words: “The reason I felt borderless passion for the stone, this sacred and primal element, was because I wanted to let the stone roll forward as the protagonist at the origin of the world.”
The Cultural Center is designed to welcome all audiences, offering more than visual encounters. It will host educational programs, family workshops, artist talks, and events that bridge sculpture with performance, literature, and community dialogue. The space becomes a living tribute to matter and meaning—a place where form and feeling coexist, and where the past is not only remembered but reimagined.
In this renewed stretch of coastline, culture is not ornamental—it’s essential. The southern suburbs of Athens are becoming more than a destination. They are becoming a way to think, to reflect, and to feel, always by the sea.
