German racing driver Benny Leuchter achieved a lap time of 07:46.13 with a near-production version of the EDITION 50¹.
The new Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50 is already making history, claiming the Nürburgring even before its official market launch. On June 20, 2025, ahead of the 24-hour race at the legendary Nordschleife circuit, Volkswagen unveiled this special anniversary edition celebrating 50 years of the GTI legacy—marking the most powerful production GTI ever created and a milestone in half a century of driving excitement.
While the model will be officially available in 2026, the EDITION 50 made its mark early. Racing driver Benny Leuchter recorded an impressive lap time of 07:46.13 behind the wheel of a near-stock version. This set a new benchmark for Volkswagen: never before has a street-legal VW model lapped the demanding Nürburgring circuit faster.
“The new Golf GTI EDITION 50 is a bold statement. It fully expresses the GTI philosophy—high power, exceptional balance, and top performance through front-wheel drive—in a form only Volkswagen can deliver,” said Benny Leuchter.
Leuchter played an active role not only as the driver but also as a technical development partner in the chassis tuning process. The record time wasn’t a fluke; it was the result of rigorous engineering development. The EDITION 50 showcased its capabilities under intense load and constant pressure.
From a technical standpoint, the test vehicle was virtually identical to the final production version. The model will be available with an optional Performance Package, featuring a high-performance chassis, specially developed 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tires, and forged wheels—all contributing to lower unsprung² and rotating mass³, significantly enhancing driving dynamics and responsiveness.
The entire chassis tuning of the EDITION 50 is tailored for maximum precision on the ideal racing line of the Nordschleife. Its advanced suspension setup allows it to absorb the track’s demanding surface, maintaining stability and control at high speeds through corners—delivering total confidence over the full 20.8-kilometer course.
The EDITION 50’s Nürburgring run adds to Volkswagen’s long tradition of record-breaking GTI performance. Around a decade ago, Benny Leuchter set the first Nürburgring lap record for a production GTI with the Golf GTI Clubsport S⁴ (228 kW / 310 PS) at 07:49.21. In 2022, the AWD Golf R 20 Years⁵ (245 kW / 333 PS) improved that with a 07:47.31 lap.
It’s worth noting that those previous lap times excluded the ~200-meter section from the T13 grandstand. The official EDITION 50 lap time includes this segment. Adjusted to the same measurement methodology, the unofficial time drops to 07:41.27—making it the largest performance leap ever recorded in GTI history. The achievement is even more remarkable considering it was set under unstable weather conditions.
Until its commercial release, the GTI EDITION 50 will be listed in the Nürburgring database under “Pre-production models.”
¹ Golf GTI EDITION 50 – near-production prototype.
² Unsprung mass: Vehicle components below the suspension system (e.g., wheels, brakes, tires). Reducing this mass improves road contact, ride comfort, and handling stability.
³ Rotating mass: Components that spin with the wheel (e.g., rims, brake discs). Lower mass requires less energy for acceleration/braking, enhancing overall performance.
