Piraeus Port Film Festival Returns for its Second Edition

September 11–14, 2025 | Piraeus Municipal Theater

The Piraeus Port Film Festival (PPFF) is back for its second year, under the auspices of the Municipality of Piraeus, taking place from September 11 to 14, 2025 at the central stage of the Piraeus Municipal Theater. All screenings and events will be free of charge, inviting audiences of all ages to experience the magic of cinema.

Three Main Sections

This year’s program features three thematic strands:

  • Danish Tribute – A focus on contemporary Danish cinema
  • Island Focus – Recent films inspired by the sea and island life
  • In Competition – The festival’s first short film competition with a cash prize

Opening Night

The festival opens on Thursday, September 11, at 20:45, with the distinguished Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel making his first appearance before a Greek audience. The evening will be hosted by Alexandros Chountas and Eleni Vaitsou.

Highlights of the Danish Tribute include screenings of landmark films such as The Promised Land by Nikolaj Arcel, Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg, and Queen of Hearts by May el-Toukhy. The program will also feature a special showcase of short films curated by the Odense International Film Festival (OFF), as part of its collaboration with PPFF.

Special Events

In parallel, a panel discussion titled “Greece – Denmark: Alliances, Similarities and Differences” will be held, featuring keynote speaker Iliana Zakopoulou, Head of the Hellas Film department at the Greek Film Centre, alongside filmmaker Gavriil Tzafkas and Felix Björnemalm (OFF).

A Festival Across Seas

With the motto Cinema Across Seas, PPFF aspires to connect the world’s ports through the port of Piraeus. As Artistic Director Lina Foundoglou notes: “The festival takes its first international step by opening a window onto the artistic cinema of Denmark. The presence of Nikolaj Arcel, who is visiting exclusively for us, marks a special moment for Greek film audiences.”

Through the PPFF, the Municipality of Piraeus reinforces its role as a cultural crossroads and highlights the Piraeus Municipal Theater as a meeting point for international cinema.
