Sailing into Tradition: The 5th Oceanida Classic Wooden Sailboat Race and Art Exhibition.

The 5th annual Oceanida event celebrated a landmark achievement, marking five years of dedication to Greece’s maritime heritage. Held on October 19-20, 2024, in Faliro Bay, this official race gathered an array of traditional wooden sailboats and rowing vessels, creating a unique spectacle along the Athenian coastline. The event provided an opportunity for the public to connect with the historic charm of these classic vessels, reinforcing the cultural significance of Greece’s nautical legacy.

Under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Sports, the Hellenic Sailing Federation, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Hellenic Tourism Organization, the Oceanida 2024 not only showcased competitive sailing but also highlighted the arts. Alongside the race, the Surfing on the Art Waves exhibition featured six artists who transformed used surfboards from Ikaria into stunning artworks. Each board, having once braved the waves, now tells a new story through its artistic transformation. Proceeds from the sale of these art pieces will support volunteer groups and innovative organizations, advancing the preservation of wooden boats and the sport of sailing.

The boards were exhibited at Athénée from October 18 to 24, bringing art lovers and sailing enthusiasts together in downtown Athens. This blend of traditional sailing and contemporary art fostered a vibrant celebration of Greek maritime culture and artistry.
