The new cycle of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation’s beloved concert series Jazz at the Museum, titled “Her Voice,” opens up fresh musical pathways this year by embracing classical music, lyrical singing and other forms of expression that highlight the timeless power of musical art. The series continues on Friday, 12 December, with the duo Seeds—Mihalis and Christos Kalkanis—joined by Alcmini in the performance “The First Bloom.”
The sonic universe of Seeds blends the acoustic timbres of double bass, clarinet and piano with electronic textures, creating soundscapes that at times evoke film soundtracks and the neoclassical scene, while at others recall the colors of Greece and its musical traditions. For this performance, the duo invites Alcmini, one of the rising voices of traditional Greek singing and a member of the female vocal ensemble Chóres, who brings timeless melodies into the present with her distinct vocal style.
Mihalis Kalkanis frequently experiments and interacts with other art forms such as photography, poetry and dance. As a solo artist, he has presented his work at venues including Flux Laboratory, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Gallery and the Benaki Museum. With his ensemble, Mihalis Kalkanis Group, he has appeared at major Greek festivals such as the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Summer Nostos Festival (SNFCC), the Athens Jazz Festival and more.
Christos Kalkanis, influenced by the musical traditions of Asia Minor and Thrace as well as classical, jazz and electronic music, creates original sonic environments as a multi-instrumentalist and composes for theatre and contemporary dance. As Seeds, the two brothers have performed at numerous festivals including Jazz Ahead, the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the Athens City Festival.
Alcmini joined the vocal ensemble Chóres, founded by Marina Satti, in 2020. She has participated in various productions, including works by the Greek National Opera such as The Murderess by Giorgos Koumendakis, and has collaborated with artists including Savina Yannatou, Petros Klampanis and Ermis. She made her solo debut with an a cappella interpretation of the traditional Thracian song “Na ’man poulí” and seeks to honor Greek musical heritage by melding age-old melodies with her distinctive voice and contemporary stylistic nuances.
