The Acropolis Museum joins the celebration of International Museum Day 2026, themed “Museums Bring the World Together”, on Sunday, May 17 and Monday, May 18, with a special programme of events and activities for visitors.
Sunday, May 17, 2026
On Sunday, May 17, the Museum will be open from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm with regular admission. Visitors will have the opportunity to attend the presentation “Acropolis Museum: Little-Known Stories from the Journey of an International Museum.”
Through a collaboration between the Department of Educational Programmes and the Department of Conservation of Antiquities, visitors will discover unique moments and memories from the history of the Museum and its collections: the construction of the contemporary building, the vision behind its exhibition programme, the transfer of artefacts from the old museum to the new one, conservation practices, exhibition installation details, and the people behind the works themselves.
This retrospective journey sheds light on the details that shaped the Museum’s identity. The Acropolis Museum is reintroduced as a living vessel of the history of the Acropolis and as an ongoing invitation to dialogue and cultural exchange.
The presentation includes a guided tour through the exhibition galleries with an archaeologist and a conservator, as well as a digital presentation at the Museum’s educational centre.

Monday, May 18, 2026
On Monday, May 18, the Museum will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with free admission to all exhibition galleries.
This year, for the first time, the Museum will also participate in the international Piano City Athens Festival with a piano recital by Manos Kitsikopoulos on the second-floor balcony overlooking the Archaic Gallery.
Manos Kitsikopoulos is a versatile pianist whose artistic practice is rooted in classical music while extending across diverse musical genres. He has received the DipRAM distinction and an award from the Academy of Athens, while also winning the Grand Prix at the international Clamo Competition in Spain. He collaborates with orchestras including the Janáček Philharmonic and the Athens State Orchestra, and teaches at the Athens Conservatoire and the Sorbas Summer Academy in Andalusia.
For the Acropolis Museum, the pianist has curated a programme featuring beloved works alongside his own solo piano arrangements. Visitors on both the first and second floors of the Museum will have the opportunity to listen to celebrated tango compositions by Piazzolla, nocturnes by Chopin, miniatures by Satie and songs by other renowned composers.
