Cycladic Identity: Supporting the Living Heritage of the Cyclades.

The Cycladic Identity Initiative of the Museum of Cycladic Art enters a new chapter with the launch of its fourth funding cycle, continuing its long-term commitment to safeguarding the cultural and natural heritage of the Cyclades. With applications open until 20 February 2026, the initiative invites non-profit organisations active across the Cycladic islands to submit proposals that contribute to the preservation and promotion of the region’s unique identity.

Since its inception, Cycladic Identity has emerged as a key platform for supporting meaningful, place-based projects. To date, it has funded 26 programmes across 15 islands, including several inter-island initiatives that reflect the shared heritage and interconnected history of the Cyclades. These projects span a wide spectrum, from cultural preservation and biodiversity to the protection of intangible traditions, reinforcing the initiative’s holistic approach.

At the heart of Cycladic Identity lie three core priorities: Culture, Biodiversity and Intangible Cultural Heritage. Each funded programme is designed to address one or more of these pillars, whether through restoration work, documentation, education or creative engagement with local communities. Current projects are being implemented on islands such as Andros, Donoussa, Koufonisia, Mykonos, Santorini, Serifos, Syros and Tinos, while inter-Cycladic programmes extend across multiple locations, including Delos and Rineia.

Beyond funding, Cycladic Identity functions as a collaborative ecosystem, connecting local organisations with scientific expertise and strategic vision. Proposals are evaluated by a distinguished Scientific Committee comprising specialists in archaeology, environmental protection and cultural storytelling, ensuring that each supported initiative meets high standards of research, impact and sustainability.

This year’s programme portfolio reflects the richness and diversity of the Cyclades: from the industrial heritage of Santorini and the historic mines of Serifos, to traditional weaving, agricultural landscapes, pollinators, dovecotes and local ecosystems explored through education and play. Together, these initiatives form a living archive of Cycladic life — past, present and future.

Launched three years ago by the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Cycladic Identity Initiative continues to invest in the islands not as static monuments, but as vibrant cultural landscapes shaped by people, nature and memory. As the fourth funding cycle begins, the initiative reaffirms its mission: to protect what makes the Cyclades distinct, while empowering local communities to carry their heritage forward.
