Valinia Svoronou’s solo exhibition “Clocks of the Tides” at CAN Christina Androulidaki Gallery.

Valinia Svoronou’s solo exhibition, “Clocks of the Tides,” opens today, May 28, at CAN Christina Androulidaki Gallery (Chalkokondyli 19, Athens), and runs until July 5, 2025.

Born in Athens in 1991, Svoronou’s multidisciplinary practice—encompassing sculpture, moving image, text, and drawing—explores the intersections of personal and collective memory, particularly focusing on overlooked female narratives and diasporic experiences. Trained in painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASKT) and holding an MA in Sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art, she brings a rich blend of cultural and historical references to her work.

“Clocks of the Tides” transforms the CAN Gallery space into a poetic landscape where time flows like the sea, echoing the cyclical rhythms of tides. Through sculptures, video installations, and delicate hand-drawn works, Svoronou invites viewers to contemplate the tensions between visibility and obscurity, memory and erasure. Her materials draw from subcultures, science fiction, craft traditions, and migration stories, many of which resonate with her family’s roots in Istanbul and Asia Minor.

The exhibition’s title evokes both the natural ebb and flow of tides and the shifting tides of history, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean. Svoronou’s work references literary and historical sources, such as Tatiana Stavrou and Akilas Millas, and traces forgotten voices, particularly of women, against the backdrop of geopolitical, cultural, and ecological transformations. Subtle echoes from the Marmara Sea, the urban fabric of Athens, and diasporic narratives merge into an immersive, contemplative experience.

This marks her fifth solo exhibition, following shows at Callirrhoë, Hot Wheels Projects, and Frankfurt am Main, as well as group exhibitions at TAVROS, the Athens Biennale 2021, EMST, Haus N Athen, and Salts. Svoronou is currently an artist-in-residence at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.

“Clocks of the Tides” invites viewers to drift through shifting temporalities and fragmented narratives that reimagine memory, history, and place.
