Athens Capital Hotel – MGallery Collection recently held a unique event dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. As part of “Pink October,” a month focused on breast cancer prevention, this renowned Athens hotel, in partnership with the NGO AgkaliaZO and the organization Women in Oncology (W4O Hellas), invited distinguished health professionals for an open discussion on a critical issue affecting one in eight Greek women.
The event was moderated by Elena Vrettou, a Professor of Physical Education and a breast cancer survivor herself, who shared her experience, delivering a message of optimism that deeply moved the audience. The engaging speeches of the experts kept the audience’s interest throughout.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Eleni Galani, a Medical Oncologist, emphasized the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, noting that 85% of cases annually are non-hereditary. Dr. Galani highlighted the need for access to preventive and treatment programs, particularly for residents in remote areas.
Following Dr. Galani, Dr. Popi Kalaitzi, a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician, underscored the importance of a healthy lifestyle in both prevention and patient recovery, advocating for balanced nutrition and regular exercise from a young age. Olga Liontopoulou, Director of the AgkaliaZO Volunteer Group Against Cancer, also stressed the essential psychological support required by both patients and their families.
Lastly, Dr. Dimitris Drakotos, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, provided insights into advancements in breast surgery and modern reconstruction techniques, which play a crucial role in helping patients regain their self-confidence.
After the presentations, attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception at the Galerie Café in the hotel lobby, where they had the opportunity to network with the experts, discuss, and share views.
